Funding on BTC and ETH reads balanced, and Hyperliquid and OKX agree on both. The options market tells a more nervous story. Skew is negative on each, with implied vol running well above what the tape has delivered.
| Asset | Funding (blended) | 25Δ skew | Implied / realized vol | Open interest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTC | +11% (HL +11 / OKX +11) | -5.5 | 39.9 / 32.3 | $3.08B |
| ETH | +10% (HL +11 / OKX +9) | -6.4 | 51.2 / 43.8 | $2.25B |
| SOL | +7% (HL +11 / OKX +3) | n/a | n/a / 50 | $0.52B |
Funding annualized; negative means shorts pay longs. 25Δ risk reversal in vol points; negative means downside hedged. Snapshots, not positions.
Start with the perps. BTC funding blends at +10.9% and ETH at +10.2%, both flagged balanced, with the two venues in step. There is no crowd lean to speak of. Options are a different matter. BTC 25d skew sits at -5.5 and ETH at -6.4, so the downside tail is the one getting bid. Vol is rich on both: BTC implied is 7.6 points above realized and ETH is 7.4 points above. Put together, the read is a market that isn't positioned for a big move through leverage but is still paying for optionality, and paying mostly for puts. That is hedging behavior. SOL can't be read the same way, because it has no options data and only a realized figure of 50.
Watch whether the put bid in BTC and ETH skew holds or fades as the tape stays quieter than implied. If realized vol stays under what options are pricing, that premium gets harder to justify. If funding starts to drift off balanced while skew stays negative, the hedgers and the leverage crowd would be pulling in opposite directions.
