Options pay up for movement while perp funding sits perfectly still

Funding prints the same +10.9% on BTC, ETH and SOL, and Hyperliquid and OKX agree to the decimal. That is a perp market with no strong opinion. Options read differently: implied vol runs above realized on both BTC and ETH, and ETH's skew has the downside tail clearly bid.

Positioning & volatility

AssetFunding (blended)25Δ skewImplied / realized volOpen interest
BTC+11% (HL +11 / OKX +11)-1.437.3 / 30.1$3.47B
ETH+11% (HL +11 / OKX +11)-4.252.6 / 44.6$2.64B
SOL+11% (HL +11 / OKX +11)n/an/a / 49.4$0.58B

Funding annualized; negative means shorts pay longs. 25Δ risk reversal in vol points; negative means downside hedged. Snapshots, not positions.

BTC funding is balanced, skew sits at a mild -1.4, and vol is rich by 7.2 points, so the crowd is neutral while option buyers pay for more movement than the tape has delivered. ETH is the same picture turned up. Funding is balanced, vol is rich by 8.0 points, and skew at -4.2 shows real demand for puts. SOL is the one coin where longs pay, with both venues in agreement. There is no options read to test it against, and realized vol sits at 49.4. Taken together, the majors show calm leverage and nervous optionality, and the nerves lean toward the downside on ETH. The prediction market adds little. Kalshi's BTC $84,000 strike barely differs from where options put it.

The sharpest split today is between products, not venues. Perps on ETH are balanced and quiet, while ETH options carry a -4.2 skew and implied vol 8.0 points above what the coin has actually realized. Someone is paying to protect against a drop the funding market isn't pricing.

What the prediction markets believe

Kalshi has BTC at $84,000 at 1% against an options fair of 0%, a +0.7pp gap. That is a small lottery-ticket premium on a long-shot upside strike. It doesn't amount to a directional call.

On-chain vs Wall Street

NVDA's token sits +40bp above its normal premium and GOOGL is +38bp above its own, so the on-chain market prices both opening firmer than usual. MSFT is the outlier the other way at -22bp under its baseline. HOOD's -295bp looks dramatic but sits close to its usual -282bp discount.

StockLast closeToken vs last close
NVDA$218+108 bp
GOOGL$321+169 bp
CRCL$82+37 bp
MSFT$532+24 bp
TSLA$408+46 bp
HOOD$90-295 bp

Bottom line

Watch whether the NVDA and GOOGL premiums hold into the open or fade back toward baseline. On crypto, rich vol needs the tape to start moving to justify itself. If ETH skew deepens while funding stays balanced, the hedgers are leading.
