BTC vol trades rich while the crowd sits neutral into 78k

Bitcoin holds $78,054 with funding split evenly between longs and shorts. What stands out is not positioning but pricing: BTC options are asking for more movement than the tape has actually delivered. ETH is the mirror image.

Positioning & volatility

AssetFunding (blended)25Δ skewImplied / realized volOpen interest
BTC+10% (HL +11 / OKX +8)+2.534.5 / 33.5$2.84B
ETH+10% (HL +11 / OKX +9)+3.249.8 / 50$2.60B
SOL+11% (HL +11 / OKX +11)n/an/a / 54.1$0.57B

Funding annualized; negative means shorts pay longs. 25Δ risk reversal in vol points; negative means downside hedged. Snapshots, not positions.

Funding reads balanced on BTC and SOL, so nobody's leaning hard either direction, and the two venues quoting BTC funding agree. On ETH longs are paying, and the skew there sits at +3.2, the most upside-tilted of the three. The real contrast is in vol. BTC's implied runs 34.5 against 33.5 realized, so options are pricing more chop than the market has produced. ETH's implied at 49.8 sits just under its 50 realized, essentially level, so its options price calmer than the tape. Same neutral crowd, opposite vol posture.

The sharpest disagreement is BTC's own options against BTC's own tape. Traders are paying up for movement that hasn't shown up: implied above realized by a full point while funding says nobody's committed to a direction. Paying for optionality without a directional bet is its own kind of positioning.

What the prediction markets believe

Kalshi has BTC finishing above $78,000 at 54%, a touch rich versus fair at +1.4pp, while the $72,000 floor and the $84,000 ceiling both price essentially where the model puts them.

Bottom line

Watch whether BTC realized catches up to what implied is charging for. If the tape stays quiet, that rich vol has to give back. ETH is the tell in reverse: its options are pricing calm right into a crowd that's paying to be long.
